Winter Is Ready, Are You?

Summer days are getting shorter, the leaves are starting to fall, and the cool crisp air is starting to settle in. The dreaded time of year for every pool owner here, it’s time to close your pool for the season. So, where do you even begin? Many pool owners take their motors off the pool pump completely and put them straight into storage. Others live in warmer climates, and many rely on freeze protection settings to take them into the winter months. The following list of tips will help you make sure you successfully close your pool and are ready to go when the season starts back up.

Motor Service

At the end of every pool season, we recommend performing a motor service to your pool pump equipment. This inspection helps identify areas of repair or improvement that need to be taken prior to the following season. By working with your local pool professional to service your pool motor, you can help extend the life of your motor and save yourself precious time in the future.

Pool professionals will typically check for signs of concern such as:

  • Leaks in pool equipment
  • Fan inlet cleanliness
  • Bearing health
  • Seal integrity
  • Freeze protection settings
  • Filter quality

Freeze Protection

Not every pool owner closes for the season. Some buckle down and brave the lower temperatures thanks to enhancements like freeze protection. This allows the pool to automatically circulate water in the event outside air temperature drops below the specified threshold. Products like the VGreen® Variable Speed motor from Century®, are standard equipped with freeze protection settings that can be changed to help support and protect the pool system. It’s always recommended that these settings are double-checked before any season change to verify your pool is always protected. For more information on Freeze Protection settings, check out the Century’s VGreen User Manual. All Century pool pump motor user manuals can be found on the Century brand page.
